The name Iolite comes from the Greek word "Los", which means purple.
It is usually found as a transparent violet-purple, light blue or yellow-grey and similarly to Tanzanite, it is said to show many different colours under different light sources, known as 'pleochroism'.
Legend has it that Viking sailors used it as the worlds first polarising filter, so during over cast days they could still determine the exact position of the sun, and navigate safely. It was therefore known as "Viking's Compass".
Today it is used to celebrate all kinds of 21st anniversaries.
